Duolingo App - Onboarding Journey
Weekends and visiting relatives are common, last weekend visited my aunt's place and saw a rare scene of my cousin completing his assignments. He was learning French, and I suddenly started recalling my French knowledge as I too had opted for French in junior college. Later that night was browsing language learning app and came across this Duolingo app for learning new languages.
Downloaded and installed the app from play store and clicked to open it. A simple screen asking me whether I am a new user or an old one in a different way, directly click "I ALREADY HAVE AN ACCOUNT " and sign in if an existing user or click a button to Get Started. You can slide 3 screens which highlight app's u.s.p. along with indicative image like
- Free language education for the world.
- Learning, families. Advance by unlocking bite-sized skills.
- Earn achievements to track your progress in the language.
Being a new user I tapped on "Get Started" and a screen with the list of languages with a logo of the country flag representing the origin of the language appeared asking me which language I would like to learn.
I selected French as wanted to brush up my knowledge. Then next screen asking me to pick a goal (daily commitment) which can also be changed later
- Casual (5 mins)
- Regular (10 mins)
- Serious(15 mins)
- Insane(20 mins)
After setting my goal to Regular (10 mins), It asked to choose a path Start at the basic (for beginners) Or Try the placement test (for users who are familiar with basics).
As I was sound enough with basics I chose the second option and it asked me to take a 5 min test to check my basic knowledge and accordingly jump ahead. The test would adapt to my level getting harder or easier based on my previous answers. And then completed my test and my level was saved after which I created my profile for the app which would save my proceedings and progress.
There is also an alternative option on "choose a path" screen to create a profile by clicking on 3 vertical dots for opening up a menu offering to create a profile/sign in/settings/feedback.Even if you Create a profile from this page it would land you back to choose your path as a beginner or to take a test.
- Keeping On-boarding experience simple and asking for only necessary information, saves user time and does not bore them.
- Give an insight of your app to the user to make them explore more
- Just not forcing sign up /sign in process on start and let user explore some portion of the app and decide whether they want to be associated with the app or not.
