Inshorts - Onboarding Journey
Sharing experience of onboarding journey of Inshorts News android app. It’s simple, intuitive and effective.
When you open inshorts app, you would get to see following journey.
It starts with language selection and by default English is chosen. I assume that this decision would be based on their existing user’s language choice and users using app in English would be higher. The screen also consist all information in two languages namely English and Hindi. This will enable users to explain the context clearly in their preferred language. You could also see Swipe Up for continue. It might be a bit unclear for users who are not used to with this type of interactions.
Next screen says “Less is More”. inshorts provides details about their core value proposition namely “Less is more” with additional information “With our 60-words shorts, you could consume more news in less time.”
After that you could see a screen for “personalising your feeds” with additional information “Pick at least 4 topics of your interest”. You could also see skip option on top right as well if you are not sure of choosing 4 topics. This screen is well designed and have amazing artwork for each categories. It’s flexible and provides opportunity to personalise feeds based on their interest.
Once you choose topics and continue then you could see an intermediate screen that comes for sometime. It conveys "My Feeds" along with additional content “Please wait! we are preparing your personalised feeds". Amazing way of providing feedback. isn’t it?
That’s all. You could immediately start reading personalised news in short.
- Language selection was well design as it contains content in both languages.
- Minimal and personalised onboarding. Inshort offers a personalise feeds based on topics. You could easily find and choose from the list of available topics. Artwork for each topic is also well designed. It also offer skip option if you are not interested to choose topics or not sure of choosing topics.
- Design for My Feed page was great. It is a great example of how to keep user engaged and informed about things happening in background. It was giving a feedback that “Please wait! we are preparing your personalised feeds. Very well done.
What could have been improvised:
- Perhaps, use of language could have been consistent. For example, it uses “personalise your feeds” and then on next screen “My Feeds”. Instead, it could have used “Your Feeds”.
