Sketch App - Achieving Balance
As a UX and Product Designer, I use Sketch heavily.
I use it more than any other digital design tool - and I suspect most Product Designers do too.
This experience is about how easy Sketch makes it to go from novice to expert.
1.Simple, minimal interface
When a new user opens up Sketch, there isn’t a massive set of tools to mess with. There is a “+” button to get started.
Comparing this with any tool from Adobe, the difference becomes very obvious.
2.Progressive disclosure of contextual menus
Building off the previous point, not all tweaks and options are available right at the start. Many options are disclosed in a sequential manner. Until there is a shape on the canvas, no customizing options are shown.
After using the app for a while, its a very short step to become an expert user. The gap between a novice and an expert user is fairly small and the jump is easy to make. The app becomes really powerful with Symbols, templates, Plugins, etc. All of these features are very easy to use as well.
The UX goal for a novice user would be to make a product easier to grasp. For an expert user, that constraint would be time. Their familiarity with the product will be high, and they want to quickly perform tasks. Reducing the learning curve for users to become experts helps make that journey pleasant.
